UPSC Civil Services Examination – Overview
The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts the Civil Services Examination (CSE) every year to recruit candidates for prestigious posts like IAS, IPS, IFS, and other Group A and B services. The exam has three stages:
- Preliminary Examination – Objective type (screening test)
- Main Examination – Written descriptive papers
- Personality Test / Interview – Final stage for merit ranking
UPSC Prelims Exam Pattern 2026
The UPSC Preliminary Exam consists of two objective-type papers conducted on the same day.

UPSC Mains Exam Pattern 2026
The UPSC Mains Examination consists of nine descriptive papers conducted over 5-7 days. Out of these, two papers are qualifying in nature, and the remaining seven are counted for merit.

UPSC Interview / Personality Test
The final stage of the examination is the Personality Test (Interview), carrying 275 marks. It evaluates the candidate’s personality, leadership, ethical values, and decision-making ability. The final merit list is prepared based on marks obtained in the Mains (1750 marks) and Interview (275 marks).
